“Your bridge is gone” read the text message we received from a neighbor down the road at 9:30 Friday morning, September 27, just about the time Hurricane Helene was winding down from a rampage overnight.
“What do you mean the bridge is gone?” No reply was forthcoming immediately, so I looked at my husband and said, “please go check the bridge.”
So he loaded into his Polaris Utility Buggy, and headed over to the venue. About three minutes later I got a text message from him all it said was, “F[-Bomb].” Then he sent me some photos. This one made my heart drop.
Hurricane Helene knocks out communication
At that point, we had absolutely no idea what was going on in the world, cell phone signals were spotty, and we were lucky that the text messages were going through, even though they were going through slowly. If we were lucky enough for a phone call to go through, it was dropping any matter of seconds. But, hearing my mom’s voice reassuring me everyone was OK at her house made me feel so much better. We had no idea what was going on in Asheville and other points north of us.
News of Hurricane Helene’s Destruction Begins Trickling In
Way back when we first moved into our house, one of the first things we did was have a back up generator installed. We were fortunate to still have Internet, and news reports started coming in slowly but surely regarding Asheville being underwater, the Lake Lure Dam’s imminent failure, trees and power down all over the area, and the devastation and loss. As the day went on, our property loss seemed less and less critical, and we began realizing how lucky we were.

Hurricane Helene Won’t Stop Us from Our Mission

We have already started cleanup, dragging bridge parts out of the muck, an engineer has already been out to survey and draw the new bridge, and construction will be starting soon! Follow our blog series to keep up on construction.
